Editorial & Review Policy

Our standard is useful, checkable information with clear limits—not implied professional authority.

Who is responsible for the content?

Pages are attributed to SoloCalc as the publishing organisation. No individual author qualification, professional membership, accountant certification or regulated-adviser status is claimed. A source-based review means checking relevant material; it does not mean a professional has signed off your circumstances.

Source hierarchy

  1. For statutory rules, use relevant legislation and official regulations where the detail requires them.
  2. Use HMRC and GOV.UK for tax rates, allowances, registration, reporting and payment guidance; use official Scottish Government material for devolved bands.
  3. Use the FCA Handbook for mortgage regulatory context and MoneyHelper for consumer explanations, with provider-specific decisions left to the provider.
  4. Other material may help identify a question but must not override verified official rules. Search-volume research is not a source of tax facts.

Where official material is historic, proposed, incomplete or ambiguous, explain that distinction. Do not silently carry an old example into a new tax year or treat a proposal as a current rate.

What a review date means

A calculator's “rules checked” date refers to the rule set and sources identified on that page. “Guidance reviewed” describes source-based explanatory review, not validation of lender criteria. Editorial dates on these policy and guide pages refer to their wording. They do not establish continuing accuracy after a rule changes.

Our update standard is to review relevant official announcements before introducing a tax year or material rule change, then check affected sources, constants, examples, tests and page wording together. No fixed daily monitoring or guaranteed update turnaround is promised. If a figure cannot be confirmed, label it provisional or keep the unsupported option unavailable.

Material changes and testing

A change to a rate, threshold, deadline or calculation assumption should be recorded in the relevant rule set and covered by a concrete automated test. Shared-engine changes require running the existing suite to check affected tools. Worked examples must use the engine rather than typed-in result figures. Browser checks complement maths tests for validation, controls and legibility.

Minor editorial edits should not reset a tax verification date. Sitemap modification dates should describe significant page-specific changes, not the date the sitemap was generated.

Corrections

Send corrections to support@solocalc.co.uk. Do not include personal identifiers, tax documents or real financial details. A useful report identifies the page, selected year and region, minimal non-personal example inputs, observed result and expected result with an official source if available. See Corrections & Contact for a privacy-safe report template.

Our correction standard is to reproduce the issue, distinguish an error from an out-of-scope case, check shared paths, and add a regression test for a changed calculation rule. Material corrections should explain the affected scope and update the relevant content; no response deadline is promised.

Commercial independence

Paid placements and affiliate relationships must not change calculation rules, input defaults or results. Any future placement must be separate from the calculation and clearly disclosed. Sources are selected for relevance, not payment. The Commercial Disclosure describes current placement status.

Limitations

Sources and tests support transparency, not a complete tax return, HMRC decision, lender quote, eligibility assessment or professional advice. Before a material decision, use current official guidance and a suitably qualified adviser.
